Houston Eclampsia and Preeclampsia Lawyer

What Is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia, also called pregnancy induced hypertension or toxemia of pregnancy, is a potentially lethal complication closely related to HELLP syndrome. It is the second leading cause of maternal death in the U.S. and a leading cause of fetal complications. Preeclampsia is characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine after the 20th week of pregnancy. Other symptoms include swelling (edema) and weight gain.

As the disease progresses, it is usually accompanied by some or all of the following:

  • Headache
  • Visual disturbances
  • Abdominal pain
  • Decreased urine output
  • Nausea / vomiting

If untreated, it can progress to eclampsia, which is a serious disease that causes:

  • Seizures
  • Brain herniation
  • Liver rupture

Deviations from Standard Treatment Protocols & Medical Malpractice

There is a well-defined standard of care for diagnosing and treating preeclampsia. Our team can use our resources and expertise to identify whether a departure from standard treatment protocols has occurred. As preeclampsia affects the blood vessels leading to the placenta, complications from preeclampsia and eclampsia include a placental abruption, cerebral palsy, and vision and hearing problems.

In order to ensure our clients receive the compensation they deserve, our attorneys work with medical economists and life care planners who can accurately calculate the costs associated with the medical care and special needs of your child. Our firm can also help you understand the potential benefits of having a structured settlement or special needs trust to protect Medicaid eligibility.
