Conditions Resulting From Birth Injuries

Learn if you have a birth injury claim today!

Complications during labor or delivery, preexisting health conditions in the mother, and other risk factors during pregnancy can create high-risk situations. When doctors fail to respond to those high-risk situations appropriately, the mother and/or the infant can be injured. This is what we call a “birth injury.”

A variety of long-term complications and disabilities can come about as a result of a birth injury, such as cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy then is not a birth injury, it is a condition resulting from a birth injury. Some conditions, like cerebral palsy, have causes other than negligence resulting in birth injury. That is why an experienced birth injury attorney should evaluate your case if you believe you have a legal claim.

Common Conditions That Could Be Caused by Injury During Birth

Complications during labor or delivery could have lifelong implications for the baby. Below are some of the most common conditions that, in some cases, can be traced back to birthing negligence.

  • Cerebral Palsy
Four out of every 1,000 births result in cerebral palsy. In some, but not all, of those cases, the cerebral palsy is caused by a medical error. Some of those mistakes include allowing the infant to remain too long in the birth canal, poor prenatal care, and improper fetal monitoring.
  • Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)
HIE is a type of brain damage that is especially common in premature babies. In fact, about 60% of preterm babies are diagnosed with HIE. This condition is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain, which could be caused by preeclampsia, umbilical cord abnormalities, and placental or uterine rupture.
  • Injuries to the Mother
The babies aren’t the only ones affected by birth injuries. Mothers often experience complications as well, although in many cases, these complications are not permanent. Some mothers experience conditions such as uterine rupture, HELLP Syndrome, and postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Kernicterus/Excessive Jaundice
While mild jaundice is relatively harmless and diminishes over the course of a few days, excessive jaundice / kernicterus can result in permanent damage such as blindness, hearing loss, or palsy.
  • Neonatal Encephalopathy
This condition can result from anoxia/hypoxia, and produce symptoms such as seizures, brain damage, difficulty feeding, and more.

Some of these conditions carry a substantial cost of care for the future. Contact us to learn more about how a birth injury claim could help you recover the money you need for your cost of care. Our firm employs full-time medical professionals on staff, allowing us to bring insight to your baby’s medical and legal needs with accuracy and precision.
